Johnson Matthey issued palladium rounds in honor of their historic expedition in 2004. Each 1/2 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium Lewis & Clark 2-Round Set includes two individual 1/2 oz palladium rounds, each with .9995 pure palladium. The two rounds are housed together inside of a sealed assay card that showcases both obverse designs and reverse designs, with the reverse of the assay card bearing the unique serial number for the set.

Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark led the Corps of Discovery expedition established as an all-volunteer group within the United States Army. Following President Jefferson’s purchase of the entirety of the French Louisiana territory, Lewis & Clark undertook a two-year expedition to map the full scope of the new territory and discover the best possible routes to the new West Coast of the United States.

On the obverse of 1/2 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium Lewis & Clark 2-Round Sets is the image of Lewis and Clark looking out over the landscape as they plot their next course through the uncharted lands of the Louisiana Territory. The design is based on a painting entitled “Lewis and Clark West to the Pacific” which was created by Frank R. Davenport.

The reverse includes the image of an American bison as designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser. Bison are one of the largest land mammals in North America and were once predominant in the wild throughout the prairies of the American Plains.

All of these 1/2 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium Lewis & Clark 2-Round Sets are produced using palladium from the Stillwater Mining Company that operates the Stillwater Complex located in southern Montana.
