Description

Spectra Fine Jewellery 38.60 Carat Ceylon Sapphire Diamond Platinum Necklace

There is a certain playfulness, even coquettishness, to fringe. Fringe is a signal to the light-hearted and lively that something spectacularly fun is about to happen. Especially when the fringe is made of diamonds. This fabulous Jazz Age-inspired necklace made by Spectra Fine Jewellery in the contemporary era, circa 2010, features a glorious cushion-cut Ceylon sapphire, weighing approximately 38.60 carats total. The sapphire is accompanied by report no. CDC 1803549 dated 28 March 2018 from C. Dunaigre stating that it is a natural sapphire of vivid blue colour and of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) origin with indications of heating. Resembling the vivid blue eye of a peacock feather, the single spectacular sapphire is set with four talon platinum prongs and accented with numerous colourless diamonds of various shapes with an estimated weight of 24.53 carats total.

More specifically, a geometric mix of diamonds, also certified by C. Dunaigre, play point and syncopated counterpoint to the centre stone, adding movement and complexity to the overall composition. Directly above the sapphire, a pear-shaped diamond with an approximate weight of 1.05 carats functions visually as a keystone, “locking” all other pieces of the design into place. Directly above the pear, a round diamond with an approximate weight of 1.58 carats and of G colour and VVS2 clarity is the focal point of the “chain” which is composed of alternating geometrics—a spectacular number of baguettes, weighing approximately 24.53 carats, and rounds, weighing approximately 8.63 carats. But the pattern is not always regular. It is interrupted and syncopated like Jazz. It is doubled, then singled out towards the clasp. The length of the chain is 16″ (40.64 cm), pendant is additionally 3.5″ (8.90 cm) long and 1.5″ (3.80 cm) wide.

This statement necklace embodies the spirit of the Roaring 20s which was full of prosperity, opulence, glamour, and a new freedom for women. Stylistically the necklace references fashion details of the time like beaded flapper dresses, fabulous feather headpieces, and dresses adorned with rows of fringe, while the overall composition suggests an elegant peacock feather. Interestingly, sapphires and peacocks have a great amount of overlap in what they represent. Peacocks are symbolic of royalty, respect, honour, and integrity, as are sapphires. They are both symbols of beauty, love, and passion. Sri Lankan, or Ceylon sapphires are some of the finest in the world, distinctive for their light and bright blue colour. The most famous Ceylon sapphire is perhaps currently worn by Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, and was previously Princess Diana’s engagement ring which she wore throughout her marriage to Prince Charles (now King Charles III). Here, the sapphire is beautifully contextualised in this light and bright Art Deco-inspired statement necklace. The enduring appeal of Art Deco lies in its glamorous association and eternally stylish aesthetic. It is escapist and fantastical, symbolic of decadence and fun – and who doesn’t need a bit of escapism in these current Roaring 2020s?
