Though it was used by his ancestors from the House of York and later by his brother Richard III, the Black Bull is most closely associated with Edward IV. He incorporated a quartered shield into his royal arms that featured the three lilies of France and the three lions of England in the quadrants. This marked his claim to both the throne of England and that of France.
