The Yale is alternatively depicted as an antelope- or goat-like figure in European mythology and is often associated with regal families.

The Yale of Beaufort followed the lineage of John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, to the British Royal Arms through his only heir. Lady Margaret was the only heir of the Duke when he died. She would take up the coat of arms that bore the image of the Yale and carry it through her four marriages. Her second marriage, to Edmund Tudor, resulted in her only child. Her son Henry founded the Tudor dynasty as King Henry VII. He bore his mother’s coat of arms throughout his life as King of England.
