The Lewis & Clark exploration of the lands west of the Mississippi River was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. A desperate Napoleon Bonaparte sold the long-held French territories in the Central and Southern US to the young American government due to a need for cash to finance his wars in Europe.
President Jefferson bought the vast stretch of land sight unseen, capturing lands that stretched from Louisiana in the south to Minnesota in the north and as far west as portions of the Pacific Northwest. Lewis & Clark set out to map and chart all of the new lands for the government in 1804 and took two years to complete the work in full.
The obverse side of each 1/4 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium Lewis & Clark Round comes with a depiction of the two explorers standing on the high ground examining the land before them. You can see Lewis pointing toward an object on the horizon as Clark listens closely. The rounds each have a date mark of “2004” denoting the 200th anniversary of the expedition.
On the reverse face of 1/4 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium 4-Round Sets is the iconic depiction of an American bison initially created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. The bison stands on a small mound of dirt with inscriptions of “United States of America” and the weight, purity, and metal content of the round.
In total, this 1/4 oz Johnson Matthey Palladium Round Set features four individual 1/4 oz Palladium rounds, each with the same designs mentioned above. The four palladium rounds are sealed inside of a green Stillwater Palladium assay card that features certification information and a unique serial number on the reverse.
