The United States Mint has issued the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle each year since its debut in 1986. The coins originally featured the image of a family of bald eagles on the reverse. Designed by Miley Busiek, this visual was used from 1986 to mid-2021. It was retired and replaced by the new design now found on the reverse of the coins.

Jennie Norris is the designer of note for the new reverse design on Gold Eagles. She submitted her bust of a bald eagle head as one of more than 30 possible options for the reverse of the new American Gold Eagles. The selection of her design for the reverse marks her first major submission to the US Mint through the Artistic Infusion Program.

Lady Liberty continues to grace the obverse side of the 2022 American Gold Eagle Coin. This effigy of Liberty shows her figure in front-facing relief as she walks toward you with a torch in her right hand to light the way and a large olive branch of peace in her left hand. Sun rays frame her figure from the horizon and there is a ring of stars in a circle around the design element.

An American bald eagle features in the reverse design of 2022 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coins. This new design from Jennie Norris shows the eagle head in left-profile relief with impressive levels of detail in its physical features, such as its plumage.
