The Silver Certificate Series introduced the Educational Series design theme on its $1, $2, and $5 notes in 1896. All three of the notes had distinctive obverse and reverse visuals, with the obverse of each note bearing a neoclassical design theme feature female allegories. Although the female allegory of History replaced Martha Washington on the obverse, the first design in the $1 series, it did not mean she was relegated off the note entirely. Martha Washington’s portrait continued on the note throughout the Educational Series release alongside her husband, President George Washington, on the reverse.
