The introduction of the American Palladium Eagle into the American Eagle Series at the US Mint brings another set of Adolph A. Weinman designs to the nation’s preeminent bullion coin series. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design already graces the obverse of the American Silver Eagle coin, and now his famed Winged Liberty design is captured on the obverse of the Palladium Eagle. Going one step further though, Weinman is also the source of the design found on the reverse of the Palladium Eagle.

Weinman’s designs featured on the Palladium Eagle are more than 100 years old. The obverse of Winged Liberty was created in 1916 and debuted on the nation’s 10-cent piece that same year. Known as the Mercury Dime, it was so called because of Liberty’s resemblance to the Roman messenger god Mercury, whose winged cap and winged shoes gave him the ability to fly at impressive speeds. The reverse design of the American bald eagle on these coins comes from the American Institute of Architect’s Gold Medal, which Weinman created in 1907.

On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz American Palladium Eagle is the image of Winged Liberty. In this design she is captured in left-profile relief wearing the winged cap similar to that of the Roman messenger god. Engravings on this face of the coin include the word “Liberty,” the national motto, the year of issue, and the initials of Weinman as “AW.”

The reverse of the American Palladium Eagle includes the image of a bald eagle clutching a branch. In creating this design for the reverse, the United States Mint was able to work with the original plaster cast of Weinman’s 1907 American Institute of Architect’s Gold Medal. Engravings include the nation of issue, face value, weight, purity, and metal content.
