Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is the first unit of the National Park System in the United States to be jointly managed on the federal and local level. Resistance locally in Kansas led to a five-year delay in the preserve’s establishment in 1996. Once finally approved, the new US National Park became the first of its kind managed by the US National Park Service, but held in private ownership.
