The Somali coat of arms borrows one design concept from the national flag, that being the use of a single star. This single star is set against a background field of horizontal lines in the center of a crowned shield. The shield is supported by a leopard on either side, with fern leaves and spears crossing beneath the shield.

The African bush elephant is the world’s largest land mammal and is considered an endangered species. In this design, an adult bush elephant is shown in left-profile relief as it walks along the savanna with its young calf by its side.
