Gold Britannia coins debuted in 1987 with a new vision of the female personification of the country created by Philip Nathan. The Royal Mint of England hosted an artistic competition in search of a new image of Britannia to use in the launch of a modern bullion series of coins. Though Britannia has featured on British coins in the past, none of those images is quite like this modern design.

Nathan’s depiction offers a powerful vision of Britannia as the guardian of the nation and controller of the seas guarding the British Isles. When the program launched in 1987, all 1 oz gold coins in the series featured 22-karat gold content, or .9167% gold. The non-gold component in those coins was copper until 1989 and silver from 1990 to 2012. Since 2013, the coins have featured .9999 pure gold content.

The obverse of 2020 British Gold Britannia Coins features the right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in the fifth-generation effigy created in 2015 by Jody Clark. It depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the Royal Diadem crown on her head. The background field of the coin includes the guilloche security feature and bears inscriptions of the Queen’s name with the face value.

On the reverse of 2020 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coins is Nathan’s design of Britannia. She is depicted with a stunning radial sunburst behind her figure. She holds a trident in her right hand and her left hand rests on a shield bearing the Union Jack design. Inscriptions on this side include the weight, purity, metal content, and date mark of the coin.
