As Mexico celebrated the centennial of the start of its War of Independence from Spain, the Mexican Mint unveiled a gold Centenario coin with patriotic symbols to honor the nation’s freedom. A statue of Winged Victory was erected in Mexico City in the 1920s, and is the primary design feature on the Mexican Silver Libertad.

On the obverse side of each coin is a depiction of the statue of Winged Victory as it stands in Mexico City. Known as the angel of independence in Mexico, her image is visible with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Izticcuahtl in the background. The volcanoes are named after a pair of lovers whose story dates back to the Aztec empire.

The reverse side bears the image of Mexico’s coat of arms. The nation’s official seal, the coat of arms includes a bald eagle perched atop a cactus and locked in battle with a serpent. Above the seal is the official name of the nation, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” while a wreath is engraved below. Around the image of the modern emblem are 10 historic versions of the coat of arms dating back to Mexico’s independence.

All Mexican Silver Libertad coins are produced at the Mexican Mint under the authority of Banco de Mexico. Founded in 1535, it is the oldest operating facility in the Western Hemisphere.
