Description

2008 979.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar

Johnson Matthey was once one of the most prominent precious metals companies in the world. First established as a gold assayer’s office in 1817, the company remained a major force in the precious metals industry until 2016 when it sold its final assets to Asahi Refining. Johnson Matthey silver bars are still available to buyers today, with most offered as Secondary Market pieces. Now, a 2008 979.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar is available to you online for immediate purchase.

Bar Highlights:

  • Bar ships to you in a standard shipping box!
  • Oversized silver bar from Johnson Matthey!
  • Secondary Market bar!
  • Contains 979.6 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • The obverse features the identifying hallmarks.
  • On the reverse is a blank field.

In 1817, Percival Norton Johnson formed a company that provided gold assaying services in London. Several decades later, George Matthey joined the company and its name changed to Johnson & Matthey. In 1852, one year after Matthey joined, the company was appointed as the official gold assayer of the Bank of England.

For the next 163 years, the company made a name for itself refining gold and silver, and later platinum. Johnson Matthey gold, silver, and platinum bars are well-known among long-term investors, but the company exited the precious metals business in 2016 with the completion of its sale of its precious metals refining business to Asahi Refining that year. Today, Johnson Matthey bars are still available to investors, but only as Secondary Market pieces.

The obverse of this 2008 979.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar features identifying hallmarks for the bar. This includes a mark from Johnson Matthey that likely includes the JM initials, as well as indications of the weight and metal purity. On the reverse side, this bar has a blank design field.

This 2008 979.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar is available to you for purchase with a standard shipping box for delivery. The bar is a Secondary Market item, which means that we did not receive this bar directly from the original manufacturer. Bars of this type often showcase nicks, scratches, dents, and other minor flaws. Please keep in mind that toning of the silver is common in older bars and is a result of the natural oxidation process. Toning has no impact on the value of the silver bar.
