In 1817, Percival Norton Johnson formed a company that provided gold assaying services in London. Several decades later, George Matthey joined the company and its name changed to Johnson & Matthey. In 1852, one year after Matthey joined, the company was appointed as the official gold assayer of the Bank of England.

For the next 163 years, the company made a name for itself refining gold and silver, and later platinum. Johnson Matthey gold, silver, and platinum bars are well-known among long-term investors, but the company exited the precious metals business in 2016 with the completion of its sale of its precious metals refining business to Asahi Refining that year.
