Formed in 1817 by Percival Norton Johnson, the company that would become Johnson Matthey started out as a small gold assaying business in London. George Matthey joined the business in 1851 and the name was changed to Johnson & Matthey. In 1852, the company became the official refiner and assayer of the Bank of England. For the next 163 years, the company was a dominant player in the precious metals industry. In 2016, it exited the market by selling its refinery business to Asahi Refining of Japan.
This 2008 978.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar is a massive industrial silver bar. The bar will be packaged with protective materials and delivered inside a protective box for shipping. This bar is a secondary market piece, an indication that it was not received by Omega Bullion directly from the original manufacturer.
You should note that Secondary Market bars can show flaws such as nicks, scratches, dings, and other imperfections. Toning of the silver is also possible and is a result of the natural oxidation process that occurs with time. Toning does not impact the value of the silver in the bar.
On the obverse of the 2008 978.6 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar, you will find simple hallmarks that identify the bar. The weight and purity are noted on the bar, as is a small mark from Johnson Matthey that consists of its JM initials. The reverse of the bar is blank.
