American Gold Eagle coins were first introduced in 1986 in both bullion and proof versions, much like its silver counterpart. However, the American Gold Eagle is struck in a total of four weights each year, unlike the silver version of the coin. While the gold bullion coins had all four weights available the first year, the ½ oz was the first fractional weight coin introduced in proof in 1987.

These particular Proof American Gold Eagles are unique because they are the last ½ oz coins to be struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The US Mint shifted production of the ½ oz coins over time from the Philadelphia Mint (1987-1993) to the West Point Mint, where production continues today.
