This release came in the early 1980s as Western economies began to levy sanctions against the government of South Africa as punishment for its apartheid system. The Gold Krugerrand, which in 1980 represented 90% of the gold bullion market, would suffer from these sanctions by the end of the decade, but 1983 still enjoyed strong demand.
In the obverse design of 1983 South African Gold Krugerrand Coins, you will find a depiction of Paul Kruger. Once a ruling member of the triumvirate that governed South Africa before its initial independence in the 19th century, Kruger would serve as the first President of the South African Republic. He would go on to serve four terms in a row before living out his life in exile in the early 20th century.
For the reverse design of the 1983 1 oz Gold Krugerrand, the South African Mint and Rand Refinery offer a glimpse of the national emblem. Here, the Springbok antelope is shown as it pronks across the plains of southern Africa.
